Does she even like me?

Parenting coach Jeanine Mouchawar sitting on a bench

The volleyball game ends, and you watch one of the girls walk over and hug her mom.

Your daughter walks over to you.

“Let’s go.”

On the drive home, you ask her a question and get that look that says, Why are you still talking?

Later, you sit down on the edge of her bed and can tell she wants you to leave.

And you think,

Why doesn’t she like me?

You know she loves you.

But sometimes it feels like she likes everyone else more.

Her friends.
Her teachers.
Pretty much anyone who isn’t you.

And it hurts.

You miss when she wanted to be with you.

When she told you things.

When you didn’t have to wonder if you were annoying her just by being in the room.

And then you tell yourself not to take it personally.

She’s 15.

This is normal.

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.

What’s your teenager’s version of “Let’s go”? “Mom, stop”? The look? AirPods back in?
