I almost texted.

Jeanine Mouchawar walking barefoot along the beach, smiling at the camera while discussing the uncertainty many parents feel when deciding whether to check their teenager's location or step in.

You open Find My Friends.

It says they're at Tyler's house.

You could have sworn they said they were going to Ashley's.

For a second, you just stare at the screen.

Wait... did I hear that wrong?

Did plans change?

Did they forget to tell me?

Or...

Did they not want me to know?

You put your phone down.

Then pick it right back up.

The little dot is still there.

Now you're having a conversation with yourself.

Do I text?

Do I wait?

If I don't say anything, am I missing something important?

If I do... am I making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be?

You know what most people say.

"Just trust your teenager."

But that's the part nobody explains.

How?

How do you resist sending the text when your mind keeps filling in the blanks?

How do you know when you're giving them healthy independence...

and when you're ignoring something you should be paying attention to?

That's where a lot of thoughtful parents find themselves now.

Not because they're controlling.

Because they're parenting in a world with just enough information to second-guess themselves.

That's the hardest part.

Have you ever found yourself staring at your phone, wondering whether to text or let it go? I’d love to hear about it.
