I hate how this happens every August
Every year around this time, I'd walk past the summer reading book sitting on the kitchen counter.
Right where it'd been for weeks.
School started in a couple of weeks.
Suddenly my heart started beating a little faster.
Maybe at your house it's not summer reading.
Maybe it's the college essay. SAT prep. Volunteer hours. Football conditioning.
Whatever it is, you can suddenly see exactly how this movie ends.
If nothing changes... we're going to be scrambling.
And just like that, you're back in the same trap.
Do I say something?
Or do I leave it alone?
Because if you remind them now, you're already bracing for another eye roll... another argument... another conversation that goes nowhere.
But if you wait another week...
You're already imagining what comes next.
Funny how one deadline can quietly pull us right back into managing everything again.
Not because we like managing.
But because we know exactly what's coming if nothing changes.
And before you know it...
the last couple of weeks of summer aren't about enjoying each other anymore.
They've become one long reminder instead.
